Kenya has five premium-tier Islamic bank accounts as of October 2026: Absa La Riba Prestige (KES 1,255 a month, waived when your balance passes KES 3.5 million), Absa La Riba Premier (KES 3,100 a month, net monthly income above KES 500,000 required, waived at KES 7 million), Gulf African Bank's Infinite Personal Account (KES 2,500 a month before excise duty, with the Qard contract named on the page) and DIB Bank Kenya's Sultan Current Account, which is the only way into the bank's Sultan Savings Account. None of the four current accounts pays any profit on the balance, because each is a deposit the bank holds as an interest-free loan; the fee buys a relationship manager, priority counters, free transfers and cards, not a return. Only Sultan Savings pays a profit, at a rate DIB does not print. This guide sets out every printed fee and threshold, converts them into an annual cost with Kenya's 20% excise duty, works out when a bundle beats a pay-per-transaction account, and explains where money that is meant to earn should sit.

What premium means at a Kenyan Islamic bank

Premium or priority banking is a service bundle, not a product class: a named relationship manager, separate counters, waived per-transaction charges, a higher-grade debit card and multi-currency capability, in exchange for a flat monthly fee, an income or balance floor, or both. The Islamic versions do the same inside a Shariah framework: Absa La Riba is the Islamic window of Absa Bank Kenya, with its own Shariah board, while Gulf African Bank and DIB Bank Kenya are fully fledged Islamic banks. The difference is covered in our guide to Islamic banks versus Islamic windows; it does not change the fee arithmetic below but it does change who signs off on the contract.

Two structural facts shape every comparison. First, a Shariah-compliant current account is almost always a Qard deposit: you lend the bank your money interest-free, the bank guarantees it and repays on demand, and no profit can be paid without turning the loan into riba. Gulf African prints this on the Infinite page, stating that the product is based on the contract Qard; Absa and DIB do not name the contract on the premium pages, but neither promises a return on the current balance. Second, Part II of the First Schedule to the Excise Duty Act charges excise duty at 20% on other fees charged by financial institutions, as consolidated in KRA's revised 2021 text of the Act, with interest, profit shares and insurance premiums excluded. Gulf African quotes its KES 2,500 fee exclusive of excise, which makes the real monthly charge KES 3,000. Absa's and DIB's pages do not say whether excise is inside or on top of the printed figure; ask before signing.

The five accounts, as printed on 20 October 2026

Absa La Riba Prestige Account

The La Riba Prestige page describes a bundled account for KES 1,255 a month that comes with a Prestige Banker, a free Absa Platinum debit card with free ATM withdrawals, an Absa Platinum credit card, personal unsecured financing up to KES 5 million, asset-based and home financing at discounted profit rates, a free savings account and free foreign-currency current accounts in all major currencies, access to Prestige Centres and free scheduled e-statements, internet and mobile banking. Maintenance is waived in full when the balance exceeds KES 3.5 million. No income requirement is printed on the account page. One detail needs checking: the page says Absa Platinum credit card, not Islamic credit card, and our review of halal credit cards in Kenya found only one Shariah-structured card in the market, so confirm with the branch which card the bundle issues.

Absa La Riba Premier Account

The La Riba Premier page is the top tier. The printed requirements are a monthly fee of KES 3,100, net monthly income of more than KES 500,000, no minimum balance, and no maintenance fee for customers holding KES 7 million and above. The bundle includes a dedicated relationship manager, access to Premier Banking centres, a Premier debit card that earns WorldMiles, brand discounts, free salary preparation, free monthly statements, one free banker's cheque a month, free local cheque and cash deposits, a free chequebook, free counter withdrawals and free mobile and internet banking. The page prints no profit-bearing element and names no contract. Compared with Prestige, Premier costs about two and a half times as much and swaps the Platinum card and the KES 5 million unsecured financing line for a WorldMiles card, counter-service waivers and the Premier centres. Our Absa La Riba guide covers the division's board and the segregation of La Riba funds from Absa's conventional book.

Gulf African Bank Infinite Personal Account

The Infinite Personal Account page is the clearest of the five on structure. It states that the product is based on the contract Qard and lists a monthly account maintenance fee of KES 2,500, exclusive of excise duty, that covers the first 25-leaf cheque book, a Visa debit card accepted locally and internationally, one SWIFT transfer a month, one RTGS transfer a month, monthly e-statements and ledger maintenance. The account can be held in KES, USD, GBP and EUR. To open it you need a national ID, passport or military certificate, one passport photograph and a KRA PIN certificate; no income floor or minimum balance is printed. The bundle's real value sits in the two transfers: a customer who sends one SWIFT and one RTGS payment every month is paying for those, with the rest thrown in.

DIB Bank Kenya Sultan Current Account and Sultan Savings Account

DIB's accounts page lists the Sultan Current Account for salaried and non-salaried customers, in KES and foreign currency, with free e-statements, a cheque book, a Sultan Gold debit card, free internal standing orders, free transaction fees, mobile and internet banking, SMS alerts, a dedicated relationship manager and access to express counters. It prints no monthly fee, no minimum balance and no income threshold. Holding it is the only way into the Sultan Savings Account, which is available in KES, USD, GBP and EUR, credits profit monthly at what the page calls attractive profit rates, allows one withdrawal a month, requires a KES 50,000 minimum operating balance and charges nothing for maintenance or counter withdrawals. DIB is the only one of the three banks whose premium tier includes a profit-bearing leg, and also the only one that publishes neither the fee nor the rate; DIB's parent reported in its 2025 integrated report that the Kenyan subsidiary opened two branches, in Mombasa and Nairobi, and grew its customer base by 6% during 2025. The DIB Bank Kenya guide covers the bank's Shariah committee and tariff guide.

What the fee buys: the annual cost and the break-even

Put the printed figures on an annual basis and the spread is wide. Prestige costs KES 15,060 a year if excise is already inside the KES 1,255, or KES 18,072 if it is not. Premier costs KES 37,200 or KES 44,640 on the same two assumptions. Infinite costs KES 36,000 once the stated 20% excise is added. The comparison that matters is against the entry accounts at the same banks, because that is what a premium customer gives up. Absa's La Riba Absa One account charges KES 50 a transaction with no monthly fee, so Prestige breaks even at roughly 25 transactions a month and Premier at 62. Gulf African's ME account charges KES 30 a transaction before excise, KES 36 after, so Infinite breaks even at about 83 transactions a month, a volume few individuals reach; read Infinite as a transfer bundle instead. DIB's standard personal current account already lists free transaction fees, so the Sultan upgrade buys service and access to Sultan Savings rather than waived charges. Our comparison of Islamic current accounts in Kenya has the full entry-tier tariffs.

Who qualifies, and what the income floors mean in Kenyan terms

Only Premier prints an income test, and it is a high one. The KNBS Economic Survey 2026, published in April 2026, puts nominal average annual earnings per person in the modern sector at KES 988,200 for 2025, about KES 82,350 a month, with the private-sector average at KES 1,042,467 and the best-paid private industry, financial and insurance activities, at KES 2,618,182 a year, or roughly KES 218,000 a month. Premier's requirement of net income above KES 500,000 a month is therefore about six times the average formal-sector wage and more than double the average in banking and insurance itself. Prestige prints no floor, but Absa's La Riba personal financing terms, recorded in our registry from the bank's own pages, evaluate the Prestige segment from income of KES 100,000 a month and the Premier segment from KES 300,000, a reasonable guide to where the bank sees each tier. Gulf African and DIB print no income floor at all, which in practice means the branch decides.

The Shariah substance behind the service

A premium tier does not change the contract underneath. Absa La Riba operates as a window under Absa Bank Kenya's conventional licence, with an independent Shariah board chaired by Sheikh Hamad, a former Chief Kadhi of Kenya, and with La Riba funds described as segregated from the conventional book; the bank's pages do not list the board members, as our review of Kenya's scholar benches notes. Gulf African publishes a three-scholar Shariah Supervisory Board (Prof. Mohamed Badamana, Dr Mohammed Burhan Arbouna and Mufti Ahmed Suliman) that approves product contracts, and DIB Bank Kenya operates under a named Sharia Supervisory Committee chaired by Dr Mohammad Abdul Rahim Sultan Al Olama. The Central Bank of Kenya's 2025 Bank Supervision Annual Report counts 39 commercial banks at December 2025 and does not treat Islamic banks as a separate supervisory category, so Shariah governance rests on each institution's own board; on that test Gulf African and DIB disclose more than Absa.

Because the current balance earns nothing, a premium customer who wants a return has to pair the tier with a Mudarabah product at the same bank. Gulf African publishes monthly declared profit rates on its Weightages and Profits page; its May 2026 sheet, which our registry holds, declared 3.2002% on the KES Kuza savings account and 5.1995% on a 12-month KES fixed deposit of KES 1 million to 10 million. DIB's Nawiri account prints profit rates of up to 4%, and Sultan Savings credits monthly at an unpublished rate. Absa's La Riba Al Mudharaba deposit takes KES 50,000 for one to 60 months with profit at maturity. Our guides to Islamic savings accounts and Islamic term deposits rank those options; the premium current account is the hub and the Mudarabah account is where the money should sit.

Deposit protection: KES 500,000 is the limit, whatever the tier

The Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation states on its deposit insurance page that cover is a maximum of KES 500,000 per depositor per member institution, that all of a depositor's accounts at one bank are consolidated and paid as a single claim up to that limit, and that payment is made only when the Central Bank places the institution in liquidation. The limit has stood since 1 July 2020 and, KDIC says, fully covers over 99% of deposit accounts by number. A premium customer is in the other 1%: a KES 7 million balance that waives the Premier fee is 93% uninsured at that bank. Business Daily reported on 14 April 2026 that KDIC had published a draft legal notice to double the limit to KES 1 million, noting that the current cap covers about 14.3% of deposits by value; as of 20 October 2026 we could not find the notice gazetted into force, so treat KES 500,000 as the operative figure. Spreading large balances across Absa, Gulf African and DIB is the only way to multiply the cover, and our KDIC and Islamic banking guide explains which products are inside the scheme.

What the pages leave out

  • DIB prints no fee, balance floor or eligibility rule for Sultan Current, and no rate for Sultan Savings; both are set at the branch and should be obtained in writing before opening.
  • Absa prints no income criterion for Prestige and no contract for either tier; the Prestige page names an Absa Platinum credit card, and whether that is the Islamic card is not stated.
  • Gulf African prints no minimum opening balance for Infinite and no income floor; the fee is explicit but the eligibility is not.
  • None of the three banks publishes what the relationship manager is obliged to do or whether bundle terms differ by branch.
  • KCB Sahl, NBK Amanah and Premier Bank Kenya have no separately branded premium Islamic tier in our registry as of October 2026.

How to choose

  • Count your monthly transactions and transfers for the last three months before you look at any bundle; if you make fewer than 25 a month and no international transfers, a pay-per-transaction La Riba Absa One or Gulf African ME account is cheaper than any premium tier.
  • If you send money abroad monthly, price Infinite against your current SWIFT and RTGS charges plus excise; the KES 3,000 bundle is built for exactly that customer.
  • If you want a relationship manager and counter-service waivers and earn more than KES 500,000 net, Premier is the only tier that prints that promise; if you earn less, Prestige gives the banker and the Platinum card for a third of the price.
  • If you want a profit-bearing premium savings leg in four currencies, DIB's Sultan pair is the only option, but get the fee and the current declared rate in writing, since neither is published.
  • Whatever tier you pick, keep money that is meant to earn in a Mudarabah savings or term account at the same bank, and keep balances above KES 500,000 spread across institutions.

Our view

For most Kenyan Muslims who can afford a premium tier, Absa La Riba Prestige is the best-priced bundle on paper: KES 1,255 a month buys a named banker, a Platinum card with free ATM withdrawals, free FX current accounts and a printed financing line, with a full waiver above KES 3.5 million. Its weaknesses are the unnamed contract, the unstated income criterion and the question mark over the credit card. Gulf African's Infinite is the honest one: it names Qard, prints its fee and its excise treatment, and is worth KES 3,000 a month only if you use the bundled SWIFT and RTGS transfers; for everyone else the ME account is the better product at the same bank. DIB's Sultan pair is the only premium tier with a profit-bearing leg in four currencies, but asking customers to open an unpriced account to reach an unpublished rate is a disclosure failure to refuse without written terms. Premier is a fine package for the executive who clears KES 500,000 net and values counter service, and an overpriced one for anyone who banks mainly on the app. Across all five you pay a flat fee for service on a balance that earns nothing, so the fee is justified only if the balance you keep for earning sits somewhere else. Frequently asked questions

Which Islamic banks in Kenya offer premium or private banking?

Three. Absa La Riba offers the Prestige account at KES 1,255 a month and the Premier account at KES 3,100 a month for net income above KES 500,000. Gulf African Bank offers the Infinite Personal Account at KES 2,500 a month plus excise duty. DIB Bank Kenya offers the Sultan Current Account, which gives access to the profit-bearing Sultan Savings Account. KCB Sahl, NBK Amanah and Premier Bank have no branded premium Islamic tier.

Do premium Islamic current accounts pay profit?

No. A Shariah-compliant current account is a Qard deposit, an interest-free loan to the bank that is repaid on demand, and Gulf African names that contract on its Infinite page. The monthly fee buys service, cards and transfers, not a return. To earn on a premium relationship you pair it with a Mudarabah account: DIB's Sultan Savings, Gulf African's Kuza or fixed deposit, or Absa's Al Mudharaba deposit.

How much is the Absa La Riba Prestige account?

KES 1,255 a month as printed on absabank.co.ke on 20 October 2026, with the maintenance fee waived in full when your balance exceeds KES 3.5 million. The bundle includes a Prestige Banker, a free Platinum debit card with free ATM withdrawals, a Platinum credit card, unsecured financing up to KES 5 million, free savings and foreign-currency accounts and Prestige Centre access. The page does not print an income requirement.

What income do you need for Absa La Riba Premier?

Net monthly income of more than KES 500,000, according to the La Riba Premier page, with a KES 3,100 monthly fee, no minimum balance and no fee for customers holding KES 7 million and above. For scale, the KNBS Economic Survey 2026 puts average formal-sector earnings at about KES 82,350 a month for 2025, so the Premier floor is roughly six times the national average wage.

Is excise duty charged on Islamic bank account fees in Kenya?

Yes. The Excise Duty Act charges 20% on other fees charged by financial institutions, while interest, shares of profit and insurance premiums are excluded. Gulf African states that its KES 2,500 Infinite fee is exclusive of excise, so the real charge is KES 3,000 a month. Absa and DIB do not say whether excise is inside their printed figures, so ask before you sign.

Is a large balance at an Islamic bank in Kenya insured?

Only up to KES 500,000 per depositor per bank, with all your accounts at that bank consolidated, and only if the Central Bank places the bank in liquidation, according to KDIC. A KES 7 million balance held to waive a premium fee is 93% uninsured at that institution. KDIC published a draft notice in April 2026 to raise the limit to KES 1 million, but we could not confirm it in force as of October 2026.
