Our Analysis
We reviewed 6 Islamic vehicle financing products from 6 Kenyan providers in August 2026. The banks print their ratios but not their rates: Gulf African Bank finances up to 95% of new vehicles (80% used, ages 1 to 7) over up to 5 years, and Absa La Riba prints the fullest matrix, new vehicles to KES 10 million over 72 months at up to 90%, in KES or USD. DIB Bank Kenya prints nothing for its Kenya auto product and quotes everything. The only complete printed rate in the market belongs to Taqwa SACCO: 10% p.a. on a reducing balance, up to KES 5 million over 60 months.
Structure splits the market. Gulf African and Premier run named Diminishing Musharaka contracts, so your installments buy out the bank's ownership units. Absa and the SACCOs run Murabaha, a fixed-price resale where the cost can never float upward. Premier's printed 100% early-payment rebate is the most consumer-friendly term we found, and Crescent Takaful Sacco is the only provider printing its full price bands (12-18% reducing) alongside contribution and fee schedules.
When comparing, look at three numbers beyond the quoted rate: the deposit (5% at Gulf African for new vehicles versus 30% at Crescent), the used-vehicle rules (age caps of 7 years, lower ratios, shorter tenors), and the insurance stack, since comprehensive cover is mandatory everywhere and can be kept halal through Takaful Insurance of Africa's motor takaful.
Debt is just one of 7 categories. Average score: 63/100.

Fixed-price Murabaha, co-ownership Musharaka, and the rules that shape every offer
Diminishing Musharaka
You and the bank co-own the vehicle; your installments buy out the bank's share. Gulf African Bank's Personal Auto Finance and Premier Bank's Motor Vehicle Financing both name the structure on their product pages.
Murabaha (Cost-Plus Sale)
The provider buys the vehicle and sells it to you at a disclosed markup, repaid in fixed installments that cannot float upward. Absa La Riba, Crescent Takaful Sacco, and the SACCOs use this structure.
Printed Ratios, Quoted Rates
Most providers print their financing ratios but not their rates: Gulf African finances up to 95% of new vehicles, Absa up to 90%, both quote profit rates individually. Taqwa SACCO prints the only bank-beating number: 10% p.a. on a reducing balance.
New vs Used Rules
Used vehicles are financed to age 7 across the market, at lower ratios and shorter tenors: Gulf African drops from 95% to 80%, and Absa from 90% to 80% with tenor falling from 72 to 48 months.
Takaful and Tracker
Comprehensive cover is required everywhere, and Crescent Takaful Sacco additionally requires a tracking device. Takaful Insurance of Africa offers Shariah-compliant motor cover, so the insurance can stay halal too.
The SACCO Route
Taqwa SACCO finances vehicles to KES 5 million over 60 months at a printed 10% p.a. reducing rate, and Crescent finances modest vehicles from KES 5,000 with named contracts, reaching buyers banks decline.

What Does Islamic Car Financing Cost?
Printed Terms, August 2026
Taqwa SACCO prints 10% p.a. reducing balance (to KES 5M, 60 months). Crescent Takaful Sacco prints 12-18% reducing bands with a 30% contribution. The banks quote rates individually against printed ratios: Gulf African up to 95% of new vehicle value, Absa up to 90% (new, to KES 10M, 72 months), Premier quote-only with a printed 100% early-settlement rebate. On top of the rate, budget for comprehensive motor cover and any tracker requirement.
Compare the deposit, tenor, insurance, and early-settlement treatment across providers, not just the monthly installment.
Alternative: Saving and Buying Cash
Buying outright eliminates all financing cost and is the most universally accepted halal approach. Some families combine approaches: a modest financed vehicle now, then saving toward a cash purchase next time.
If you save toward a purchase, a Shariah-compliant money market fund keeps the fund halal while it grows.
How Should You Finance a Vehicle?
You can save and buy cash
Do that. No financing structure beats no financing.
You want the smallest deposit on a new car
Gulf African Bank finances up to 95% of new vehicles under a named Diminishing Musharaka with a 48-hour approval claim. Absa's Premier and Prestige segments get 90%.
You want the only printed rate in the market
Taqwa SACCO's asset finance runs at a printed 10% p.a. on a reducing balance, up to KES 5 million over 60 months. The gate is SACCO membership: 3 months and at least one share.
You might settle early
Premier Bank prints a 100% rebate on early payment: settle ahead of schedule and the remaining profit is waived. Confirm the rebate in the contract before signing.
You're financing a modest vehicle or boda
Crescent Takaful Sacco finances vehicles from KES 5,000 to 2 million on named Murabaha or Diminishing Musharaka contracts with printed rates, reaching ASAL counties banks skip.

Quick Answer
The best Islamic car financing in Kenya depends on your deposit and whether you value printed terms. Gulf African Bank finances up to 95% of new vehicles under a named Diminishing Musharaka; Absa La Riba prints the fullest matrix (new to KES 10 million, 72 months, up to 90%); Premier Bank prints a 100% early-payment rebate; and Taqwa SACCO prints the market's only complete rate at 10% p.a. reducing balance. Used vehicles are financed to age 7 at lower ratios. Comprehensive motor cover is mandatory and can be kept halal through Takaful Insurance of Africa.
Key Takeaways
- Two structures dominate: Murabaha (fixed-price resale, installments never rise) and Diminishing Musharaka (co-ownership buyout).
- Banks print ratios, not rates: 95% new-vehicle financing at Gulf African, 90% at Absa, all profit rates by quote.
- Taqwa SACCO's 10% p.a. reducing balance is the only complete printed rate; Crescent prints 12-18% bands with a 30% contribution.
- Used vehicles are capped at 7 years of age market-wide, with lower ratios and shorter tenors.
- Premier Bank's printed 100% early-payment rebate is the most consumer-friendly settlement term in the market.
