Our Analysis

We tracked 40 Islamic deposit products from 7 Kenyan providers in August 2026, and the sharpest divide is disclosure. Gulf African Bank publishes monthly declared Mudarabah rates and weightages as dated PDFs (3.2002% on KES savings for May 2026, fixed deposits to 6.95% for large placements), DIB Kenya prints a single 'up to 4%' figure on its Nawiri account, and Absa La Riba prints 3% quarterly on Sultanah. Every other deposit rate in the market is quote-only.

Structure matters too. Three banks are fully Shariah-compliant: Gulf African Bank, Premier Bank Kenya, and DIB Bank Kenya, all CBK-licensed and KDIC members. KCB Sahl, Absa La Riba, and National Amanah are windows inside conventionally licensed banks, since Kenya issues no separate Islamic banking licence. The SACCOs split further: Taqwa SACCO holds a SASRA deposit-taking licence but no KDIC cover, and Crescent Takaful Sacco sits outside SASRA supervision entirely, so its deposits carry no protection at all.

Practical guidance: keep everyday money in a Qard current account or Mudarabah savings account at a KDIC member bank whose disclosures you can verify, note profit-eligibility rules before you count on a rate (Gulf African Bank requires KES 10,000 held through each 3-month tenure with one withdrawal), and treat quote-only providers as unpriced until they put their numbers in writing.

Banking is just one of 7 categories. Average score: 63/100.

How Islamic Banking Works in Kenya

Qard current accounts, Mudarabah savings pools, and the disclosure that separates good providers from labels

Mudarabah Savings

Your deposit joins a pool that finances the bank's Islamic assets, and you share the realized profit. Gulf African Bank is the only Kenyan bank that publishes monthly declared profit rates: 3.2002% on KES savings for May 2026, with the full weightage sheets archived as PDFs.

Qard Current Accounts

Current accounts hold your money as an interest-free loan to the bank: fully repayable on demand, earning nothing, invested only in Shariah-compliant assets. Gulf African Bank and Premier Bank print the Qard contract name on the account pages.

Published Rates Are Rare

Only a handful of numbers are printed anywhere in the market: Gulf African Bank's monthly declarations, DIB Kenya's 'up to 4%' on the Nawiri account, and Absa La Riba's 3% quarterly profit on the Sultanah account. Everything else is quote-only.

CBK Licensing and KDIC Protection

The Central Bank of Kenya licenses all commercial banks; deposits at KDIC member banks are protected up to KES 500,000 per depositor. Kenya has no separate Islamic banking licence, so windows like KCB Sahl, Absa La Riba, and NBK Amanah operate under their parent's conventional licence. SACCO deposits are not KDIC-insured.

Digital Islamic Banking

Absa La Riba opens accounts fully online with a Kenyan national ID and runs mobile financing via La Riba Timiza (*848#). DIB Kenya offers WhatsApp banking, and Taqwa SACCO runs FOSA mobile banking on *879#.

Women's and Purpose Accounts

Absa La Riba's Sultanah women's account prints a 3% quarterly-paid profit rate, DIB Kenya's Malkia account is maintenance-free, and NBK's Almasi account bundles preferential motor takaful rates. Hajj savings accounts run at Gulf African Bank, Premier Bank (Labbeyk), and Crescent Takaful Sacco.

Choosing the Right Halal Bank Account

Understanding Islamic Banking Returns

Current vs Savings Accounts

Islamic current accounts operate on a Qard basis: the bank safeguards your money and pays no return. Savings and term deposits use Mudarabah profit-sharing, where you earn a share of the pool's realized profit. Gulf African Bank's May 2026 declarations ran 3.2002% on KES savings and up to 6.95% on large term deposits; most other providers quote rates individually.

Prefer providers that publish declared rates and weightages; in Kenya that is currently one bank.

Deposit Protection

Deposits at KDIC member banks are protected up to KES 500,000 per depositor per bank. All the CBK-licensed banks in this comparison are members. SACCO deposits are never KDIC-insured: Taqwa SACCO is SASRA-supervised, and Crescent Takaful Sacco has no prudential supervision at all. Size your balances accordingly.

Windows Operate Under Conventional Licences

Kenya has no separate Islamic banking licence. KCB Sahl, Absa La Riba, and National Amanah are Islamic windows of conventional banks that describe segregating Islamic funds from conventional operations. The three full Islamic banks hold nothing conventional. Decide how much that distinction matters to you before comparing rates.

Which Islamic Bank Account Is Right for You?

You want rates you can verify

Gulf African Bank is the only Kenyan provider publishing monthly declared Mudarabah rates and weightages as dated PDFs, in KES and USD, alongside a named three-scholar Shariah board.

You want one fee-free account that transacts and earns

DIB Kenya's Nawiri account charges no monthly maintenance, allows unlimited transactions, and prints profit of up to 4% on the monthly average balance, the only printed transactional profit figure in the market.

You're a woman comparing segment accounts

Absa La Riba's Sultanah account prints a 3% quarterly-paid profit rate with up to 0.5% debit card cashback. DIB Kenya's Malkia and NBK's Almasi (with preferential motor takaful rates) are the fee-free alternatives.

You want the cheapest possible entry

Premier Bank's Ufanisi Binafsi account opens from KES 200 with zero maintenance and a printed Qardh contract. NBK's Amanah Taifa opens from KES 500 with zero maintenance.

You need branches everywhere

KCB Sahl Banking runs the full Islamic shelf through all KCB branches countrywide, Kenya's largest network, with the complete tariff printed on the current account page.

You're saving for Hajj or Umrah

Gulf African Bank's Hajj Account has its own line in the bank's published declared-rate PDFs. Premier Bank's Labbeyk account is a labelled Mudaraba alternative, and Absa's Al Hadaf adds discounted FX for pilgrims.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick Answer

The best Islamic bank account in Kenya depends on whether you want verifiable rates or the lowest fees. Gulf African Bank is the only provider publishing monthly declared Mudarabah rates (3.2002% on KES savings for May 2026), DIB Kenya's Nawiri account prints profit of up to 4% with no monthly fees, and Absa La Riba's Sultanah account prints 3% quarterly for women. Current accounts run on Qard (no return, no riba risk); savings accounts run on Mudarabah profit-sharing. The full Islamic banks are CBK-licensed and KDIC members; the windows operate under conventional bank licences.

Key Takeaways

  • Returns come from Mudarabah profit-sharing, not promised interest; Gulf African Bank is the only provider publishing monthly declared rates.
  • Printed rates elsewhere are rare: DIB Nawiri 'up to 4%' and Absa Sultanah 3% quarterly are the only other published figures.
  • Deposits at KDIC member banks are protected up to KES 500,000 per depositor; SACCO deposits are never KDIC-insured.
  • KCB Sahl, Absa La Riba, and NBK Amanah are windows under conventional CBK licences; Gulf African, Premier, and DIB Kenya are fully Islamic banks.
  • Watch profit-eligibility rules: minimum balances and withdrawal limits decide whether you actually earn the declared rate.
