Mombasa has eleven dedicated Islamic bank branches plus the Sahl window inside every KCB branch, which makes it the best-served city in Kenya for halal banking relative to its size. Gulf African Bank has four branches (Jomo Kenyatta Avenue, Bondeni, Nkurumah Road and Nyali), DIB Bank Kenya has three (Bondeni, Moi Avenue and Nyali) and Premier Bank has four (Bondeni, Digo Road, Dedan Kimathi Road and Nyali). Takaful Insurance of Africa, the country's only licensed takaful operator, has its coastal office at Oriental Building on Nkurumah Road. Taqwa SACCO lists only its Nairobi office; join by email. Start with the Islamic bank accounts hub for what each account costs.

Who is actually in Mombasa, and who serves it from Nairobi
Three full Islamic banks and one window have counters in Mombasa. The full banks are Gulf African Bank, DIB Bank Kenya and Premier Bank Kenya; the window is KCB Sahl, which KCB's page says is available across all KCB branches. Absa La Riba and NBK National Amanah are also windows, sold through Absa and National Bank branches respectively; their public pages do not carry a Mombasa-specific list, so use each bank's branch finder and ask whether a La Riba or Amanah relationship officer sits in that branch.
The SACCOs are different. Taqwa SACCO, the only SASRA deposit-taking licensed Islamic SACCO, prints a single address, Ground Floor, Jamia Plaza, Kigali Street, Nairobi, and takes membership applications by email or online form. Crescent Takaful Sacco's website was unreachable when we checked, so its coastal reach is not confirmed here. Our national map, Islamic banking beyond Nairobi, covers the rest of the country; this page is the Mombasa street list.
Gulf African Bank: four Mombasa branches, plus Malindi and Lamu
Gulf African's branch locator returns four Mombasa locations: the Jomo Kenyatta Branch at Butech Building opposite Makupa Police Station; the Bondeni Branch on Abdel Nasser Road; the Nkurumah Branch at Najat House on Nkurumah Road; and the Nyali Branch on the first floor of Promenade Mall. Further up the coast it lists a Malindi Branch at Blue Marlin Building on Lamu Road and a Lamu Branch at the old Telkom office on Jomo Kenyatta Road. That gives the bank six coastal counters, more than any other Islamic institution.
Every Gulf African account and financing product is available at the counter. The ones that matter most on the coast are the Biashara and SME business accounts for traders, the Hajj Account for pilgrimage savings, the Kuza savings account, and the trade finance, LPO and asset-based financing lines for import businesses around the port. Deposits also go through the bank's M-PESA paybill, and GAB Express mobile banking covers daily transactions, so a Malindi or Lamu customer can bank without travelling to the branch for anything other than onboarding and financing.
DIB Bank Kenya: Bondeni, Moi Avenue and Nyali
DIB's site names three Mombasa branches. The Bondeni Branch is at Suhufi Palace Building on Abdel Nasser Road, the Moi Avenue Branch is at Jubilee Building, and the Nyali Branch, opened on 23 April 2025 as the bank's eighth in Kenya and third in Mombasa, is at the Total Energies on Links Road. Published hours are 8.30 am to 4.30 pm on weekdays and 9.00 am to 1.00 pm on Saturdays, closed on Sundays and public holidays. The contact centre is reachable on +254 709 913 000 and WhatsApp on +254 716 626 262.
DIB's personal shelf at these branches is current and savings accounts, the Malkia women's account, mortgage, plot and construction finance, and the only published mobile banking tariff among Kenya's Islamic banks. Three branches in one city for a bank with eight nationally is a deliberate coastal bet, and Mombasa customers get the same branch density as Nairobi.
Premier Bank: four Mombasa branches and Malindi
Premier's locator returns four Mombasa branches: Bondeni Branch at Bat-Haf Plaza on Abdel Nasser Road; Mombasa Digo Road Branch at Shah Mansion Building, ground floor, opposite the GPO; Mombasa Imaara Branch at Imaara Building on Dedan Kimathi Road; and Nyali Branch at Basic Nyali Mall on Links Road. It also lists a Malindi Branch at Malindi Complex on Lamu Road. Each has an ATM, and all route to the head office line on 020 2843000.
Premier is the bank that prints the Shari'ah contract on nearly every product page: its mortgage is a Diminishing Musharaka at up to 90% financing over 20 years with a 100% rebate on early settlement, its check-off facility a Murabaha or Tawarruq up to KES 5 million over 7 years, and its Ufanisi Chama account opens at KES 1,000. Its Labbeyk savings account is built for Hajj. For a trader on Digo Road or Abdel Nasser Road, Premier and Gulf African are a few hundred metres apart, so compare both tariff guides before choosing.
KCB Sahl, Absa La Riba and NBK Amanah: windows inside conventional branches
KCB Sahl's page states that Sahl products are available across all KCB branches, so every KCB branch in Mombasa County can open a Sahl current, savings or Tuungane group account and originate Sahl financing. KCB has the widest branch and agent network of any bank on this page, which makes Sahl the practical option for Likoni, Changamwe or Kilifi residents who cannot reach the island branches easily. The trade-off is that a Sahl account sits inside a conventional bank, a point our window-versus-bank coverage explains.
Absa La Riba onboarding is digital, with account opening online and the La Riba financing pages applying nationwide, so a Mombasa customer can open an account without a branch visit and use any Absa branch for cash. NBK National Amanah is sold through National Bank branches. Neither bank prints a Mombasa-specific Islamic desk, so phone ahead.
Takaful Insurance of Africa in Mombasa
Takaful Insurance of Africa lists three branches: the Nairobi head office at Renaissance Corporate Park on Elgon Road in Upper Hill, the Mombasa office at Oriental Building on Nkurumah Road, and Eastleigh at Madina Mall on General Waruinge Street. The phone line is 0703 808 010 and WhatsApp 0731 808 010. TIA is the only operator licensed by the Insurance Regulatory Authority to write takaful, so the Nkurumah Road office is the only place on the coast to buy motor, medical, personal accident, home or travel takaful face to face.
For Mombasa this matters because the bank financing above requires cover: Gulf African's auto finance needs motor cover and its home finance needs a domestic package; DIB and Premier require the same. Ask the bank to accept a TIA policy with the bank's interest noted rather than defaulting to the panel insurer. The takaful hub explains the products and the surplus-sharing model.

Malindi, Kilifi, Lamu and the south coast
Malindi has two Islamic bank branches: Gulf African at Blue Marlin Building and Premier at Malindi Complex, both on Lamu Road. Lamu has one, Gulf African at the old Telkom office on Jomo Kenyatta Road. Kilifi town has no dedicated Islamic bank branch on any locator we checked, so Kilifi residents use KCB Sahl through the local KCB branch or travel to Nyali, where Gulf African, DIB and Premier all have branches on or near Links Road. South coast residents in Likoni, Ukunda and Diani are in the same position: KCB Sahl locally, or the Mombasa island branches.
- Malindi: Gulf African Bank (Blue Marlin Building, Lamu Road) and Premier Bank (Malindi Complex, Lamu Road); TIA by phone or through the Mombasa office.
- Lamu: Gulf African Bank at the old Telkom office, Jomo Kenyatta Road; Premier and DIB by mobile banking from Malindi or Mombasa.
- Kilifi and Mtwapa: KCB Sahl at the local KCB branch, or the Nyali branches of Gulf African, DIB and Premier.
- Likoni, Ukunda and Diani: KCB Sahl locally; island branches on Abdel Nasser Road, Digo Road and Nkurumah Road for everything else.
- Anywhere on the coast: Absa La Riba by digital onboarding, Taqwa SACCO membership by email to the Nairobi office.
Who should choose what
A trader around the old town or the port should walk the triangle of Abdel Nasser Road, Digo Road and Nkurumah Road, where Gulf African, DIB and Premier all have branches within a few minutes of each other, and compare the Biashara, business current and Umma accounts on tariff rather than brand. A salaried resident of Nyali or Bamburi has all three full banks on Links Road or at Promenade Mall and should pick on the account tariff and the financing they intend to use later.
A resident of Likoni, Kilifi or the south coast should open a KCB Sahl account at the nearest KCB branch and use it as the everyday account, adding a Gulf African or DIB relationship when financing is needed. Anyone financing a car or home should visit TIA on Nkurumah Road before the bank visit, so the takaful quote is ready when the bank asks about cover. A Malindi or Lamu resident has Gulf African as the only full Islamic bank in town, with Premier added in Malindi. Browse every institution's page on the providers directory.
